Dear MIT Postdocs,

Happy New Year! There are many professional development opportunities at
MIT in January and beyond, and numerous resources.

(1) *MIT's Independent Activity Period (IAP)* is underway, Jan. 4 - Jan
29, 2016.
Many classes and activities meet for one hour and are free. See details
at *http://web.mit.edu/iap/
*You could check the listing by category, sponsor (such as academic
department, Technology Licensing Office, etc.), or date. There are
multiple topics, including engineering, skill development
(presentations, teaching, communication, leadership, research),
start-ups, and more.

*MIT Library sessions* (on topics such as patents, data mining and
management, literature searches, and scholarly reputation management)
listings may be found here: http://student.mit.edu/iap/ns189.html**

*For MIT's Office of Global Education and Career Service*s' January
sessions, see http://gecd.mit.edu/mit-events?month=2016-01
and http://gecd.mit.edu/career/postdoc
The sessions are cross-listed in the IAP catalog. Some of those sessions
will be presented by Bob Dolan, MIT Career Advisor for Postdoctoral
Scholars, and are summarized on the attached document.

*MIT Can Talk* *[Oral Communication Skills] *- Tony Eng
(<tleng at mit.edu>) would like postdocs to know about the *MIT Can Talk*
IAP program. See details at http://mitcantalk.mit.edu.Many of the great
thinkers of the past excelled in both Engineering/Science and
Exposition/Rhetoric/Oration. MIT engineers and scientists of today, the
creative men and women who will be the leaders of tomorrow, can be
excellent speakers as well. "MIT Can Talk" was organized to promote
campus-wide awareness of good oral communication skills. This series of
independent workshop sessions on public speaking/oral communication is
open to anyone; the sessions are practical, hands-on, and address
aspects of public speaking. (An additional event is a competition open
to MIT students only.)
