*/2016 Call For Pre-proposals for /*
*/T/**/ranslational Research Grants, /*
*/Masdar Institute and MIT Innovation Program (MMIP)/*

The *MIT Deshpande Center for Technological Innovation *in coordination
with the *MIT and Masdar Institute Cooperative Program (MICP)*is pleased
to announce a *call for pre-proposals * for a joint institute
translational research *grant innovation program.*
**
In its third year, the* MIT&MICP Innovation Program (MMIP) *helps MIT
and Masdar Institute of Science and Technology faculty and students, who
propose to work jointly, to prepare to commercialize breakthrough
technologies and inventions by transforming promising ideas at MIT and
Masdar Institute into innovative products and cutting-edge spinout
companies. The MMIP makes modest but pivotal investments in
translational research by some of MIT's and Masdar Institute's most
talented scientists and engineers.

The MMIP program will focus on Ignition Grants at MIT and Masdar
Institute, with separate funding at each institute. These grants are
*open only to MIT and Masdar Institute faculty with Principal
Investigator (PI) status proposing to work jointly. *Our grant program
provides significant benefits to its recipients and helps bridge a
funding gap between basic science and the availability of private-sector
funding for emerging innovations.
*
Pre-proposals are due March 18, 2016 at 5:00 p.m.*EDT. For more
information, please see below or visit our proposal submission

*TOPIC: **2016 Call For Pre-proposals for Translational Research Grants,
MIT&MICP Innovation Program (MMIP) *
**
*DUE DATE*: Pre-proposals are due *March 18, 2016 at 5:00 p.m. EST*
*OVERVIEW*
Do you need resources to further an unproven concept or invention with
market potential? Is your technology getting close to the
commercialization stage, but you need help determining the right
application or connecting with the business community? This is where the
MIT&MICP Innovation Program (MMIP) can help.

As part of collaborative efforts under the MI/MIT Cooperative Program
between MIT and the Masdar Institute of Science and Technology, a series
of joint innovation and ignition grants are to be competitively awarded
which will be administered by the MIT Deshpande Center and will serve as
a learning experience for Masdar Institute faculty and students aimed at
commercializing university research.

For this third year of the MMIP program, the funding will focus on
Ignition Grants at MIT with similar funds at the Masdar Institute.
  These grants are open only to MIT and Masdar Institute faculty with
Principal Investigator (PI) status proposing to work jointly. Our grants
help bridge a funding gap between basic science and the availability of
private-sector funding for emerging innovations.
*
*
*Ignition Grants*: The MIT Deshpande Center will award one-year Ignition
Grants of $50,000 to MIT researchers, and the Masdar Institute will
award similar funds (approximately $50,000) to Masdar Institute
researchers who propose to work jointly on projects, for promising yet
still-unproven work on inventions with a potentially large commercial
impact. By funding positions for graduate students/post-doctoral
researchers, a grant allows the team to conduct exploratory experiments,
validate a concept, and/or develop a working prototype. Throughout the
project term, the technology risk reduction may involve iterative
prototyping and product design, and market risk reduction will occur
with customer and market research. Project teams will have extensive
interactions with the project Catalyst (mentor) and will have exposure
to potential customers, collaborators, and investors as the project is
shaped to address a potential market opportunity.

Grantees who make significant progress toward validating the commercial
viability of their invention are encouraged to apply to renew their
funding via an Innovation Grant in the following year(s). The cumulative
value of an initial grant (Ignition Grant) plus subsequent renewals
cannot exceed $250,000 at MIT and $250,000 at Masdar Institute.

Along with funding, the MMIP grant recipients receive:

  * Exposure through MIT Deshpande Center events and opportunities to
    connect with investors, entrepreneurs, the business community, and
    the media as appropriate.
  * Support through our Catalyst Program, including customer contacts,
    business advice, market input, and IP strategy.
  * Opportunity to participate in i-Teams, a cross-campus course that
    involves highly qualified teams of pre-screened graduate students in
    MMIP projects.

*ELIGIBILITY AND SELECTION CRITERIA*
Faculty and researchers at both MIT and Masdar Institute with* Principal
Investigator (PI) status* are able to *apply for a joint research
grant*, with the eligibility based on a requirement that the project be
joint between the two institutions.

Selection Criteria for MMIP Ignition Grants are also required to align
with one of *Masdar Institute's strategic research areas*; these
research areas (listed below) address the key sustainability challenges
and enhance core analytical and experimental capabilities.

  * Energy technologies for solar energy, intelligent/efficient
    buildings, energy storage and/or electrical power transmission and
    distribution.
  * Water technologies for desalination, water recycle and re-use and/or
    water efficiency and conservation.
  * Advanced materials, microsystems, and information/computing
    technologies as applied to these energy and water domains.

The MIT Deshpande Center will manage a grant selection process for the
MMIP grants, and grant award recommendations will be made to the
Governance committee for approval.

Grant projects for consideration will be assessed on six selection criteria:

  * impact
  * technology
  * team
  * timeframe until commercialization
  * ability to meet the Deshpande Center mission
  * value added to Masdar Institute

*HOW TO APPLY*
*All applicants must submit a Pre-proposal to this online grant
submission system
