*Future of Research Boston 2015*

In 2014, the Future of Research Symposium led by Kristin Krukenberg and
Jessica Polka was hugely successful in getting early career researchers to
discuss issues such as funding, training and competition in research, but
also in providing a voice that has very much entered the national debate on
the future of the scientific enterprise. Meetings have also spread to New
York, San Francisco and Chicago. If you missed out on last year’s meeting,
you can find out more here <http://futureofresearch.org>, read the White
Paper <http://f1000research.com/articles/3-291/v2> that came out of the
meeting, or come along to this year’s event at Boston University, October
22-24th <http://futureofresearch.org/boston/>:

It has become very clear that there is very little data about how science
is being done. Nobody knows how many postdocs there are in the U.S., with
estimates ranging anywhere from 38,000 to nearly 100,000. And no-one knows
where they are going after doing a postdoc. Currently, the rhetoric is that
8% of PhDs end up getting tenure-track faculty positions, and it’s often
said that there are plenty of other careers for PhDs and postdocs to go
into.

But how many of those jobs exist? How many PhDs and postdocs end up in
employment using their training and skills? Are there too many people in
the system, or too few? Do we need to switch to using staff scientists?
These are just some of the questions that we are trying to answer, bringing
in scientists, labor economists, publishers, administrators and young
researchers. The keynote will be by Paula Stephan from Georgia State
University on “The Economics of the Postdoctoral Position”. We hope that
people interested in how science is being done, from all ages and
backgrounds and fields, will attend.

REGISTRATION IS OPEN HERE

We hope you will be able to attend, but we also plan on making all of our
materials accessible and live-streaming the event, so please tell anyone
else you think may be interested outside the Boston area. The event will
run on the evening of Thursday October 22, all day Friday 23, with a chance
for active participation (and cash prizes!) on Saturday 24th (see below).
There will also be a pub event held with Mass AWIS with more info here

on
the evening of October 22nd.

*Science Activism/Hack Day with ASBMB with $$$ prizes*

There will also be a Science Activism/Hack Day with ASBMB
<http://policy.asbmb.org/2015/09/23/announcing-the-forasbmb-hack-day-on-oct-24/>
which
includes the opportunity to win $1000 prizes for the best projects. The aim
in brief is to find ways of solving the problems in data collection and
dissemination that have been discussed in the symposium. For more
information and if you have any questions, please check here
