Dear MIT Postdocs,
A new initiative of the PDA Community Building Committee (CBC) this year is to provide more opportunities for the postdocs to get involved in the local community in Boston and Cambridge. The CBC puts on many social events to strengthen our postdoc community internally at MIT, but it is the feeling of many that we need to reach out to the greater local community at large. It is well known that us postdocs like to dwell on our own issues and we are all very busy, but there are many less fortunate than ourselves that could benefit from our time and kindness.
Therefore, I would like to invite all of the MIT postdocs to participate in various community service opportunities that we plan on organizing throughout the year. We will be coordinating with local charities to organize MIT postdoc volunteer groups for various activities around Boston and Cambridge. This will include opportunities such as holiday food preparation, tutoring and teaching, gift drives, and elderly support.
Please watch for the emails and sign-up for volunteering opportunities to lend a helping hand!
The first two events are starting as soon as this weekend:
1) Thanksgiving Basket Giveaway Packing at the East End House
The East End House in Cambridge is an organization that serves families and individuals in the local Boston and Cambridge community. They will be packing bags of food and supplies for their Thanksgiving Basket Giveaway this Saturday Nov. 22, 2014 from 10:00 AM - 1:00 PM. They need up to 20 more volunteers to help pack and organize bags. Please come out and support the East End House as a representative of the MIT postdocs this Saturday.
Please sign up immediately so that we can let them know how many volunteers we will have. I will send out an email with details to the first 20 volunteers that sign up.

Date: Saturday November 22, 2014
Time: 10:00 AM - 1:00 PM
Where: East End House
105 Spring Street
Cambridge, MA 02141
2) MIT Giving Tree Gift Drive
In collaboration with the MIT Public Service Center, we will be participating in the MIT Giving Tree Gift Drive again this holiday season. Last year the MIT postdocs were the #1 group in gift purchases by a large margin. Let's beat our own record this year!
The Giving Tree Gift Drive is an initiative to purchase small gifts for many poor and homeless children in the Boston/Cambridge area. Information on the drive can be found here: MIT Giving Tree Gift Drive<http://web.mit.edu/mitpsc/whatwedo/volunteering/programs/givingtree/getinvolved.html>
A separate email will come later today with details on how to purchase gifts from the Amazon Wish List. The gifts will be shipped directly to the MIT PSC, so all you need to do is pick one or two small gifts to purchase and your contribution will be complete!
We hope that everyone can find the kindness in their heart and the time in their schedule to help those less fortunate in our local community this year!
Happy Holidays,
