This IAP, Alison Hynd (Fellowships & Internships Coordinator at the PSC) and Kimberly Benard (Program Advisor for Distinguished Fellowships at the GECD) are sponsoring a workshop for faculty members and graduate students about writing recommendations. Our main speakers are Professor Anne McCants (Chair of History) and Professor Steven Strang (Director of the The Writing and
Communication Center ), and we will have Alison, Kim, and Erin Scott (from Pre-Med) on hand to speak about specifics in each of these areas. We are going to cover a few main topics:
1)Content
2)Time Management
3)How to Turn Students Down
4)Audience.
As a new faculty member, we know that you will soon be receiving recommendation requests from students, so we encourage you to attend and share this info with your colleagues.

Dr. Steven Strang (Director of the Writing and Communication Center and Professor in 21W) has served as Fiction Editor for the magazine Just Pulp and was the Publisher and Editor of the literary journal The Pale Fire Review. He reviews manuscripts for several publishers and journals. He is a communication and writing consultant for various universities, businesses and companies. He has taught writing at MIT for over 26 years.
Dr. Anne McCants (Chair of History) received her A.B. from Mount Holyoke College in in 1984 and her Ph.D. in 1991 from the University of California at Berkeley. She is the recipient of the 1996 Edgerton Faculty Achievement Award and the 1999 Levitan Prize from MIT, and the 1999 Mary Lyon Achievement Award and the 2009 Elizabeth Topham Kennan Award <http://shass.mit.edu/news/news-2009-mccants-receives-kennan-award> from Mount Hoyoke College. She teaches courses in medieval and early modern Europe, economic history, and women's history. Her research is centered on issues in historical demography, early modern trade and consumption, and the standard of living in pre-industrial Europe. Recent publications include articles in Explorations in Economic History, Family History, Historical Methods, and in the Journal of Economic History. Professor McCants' book, Civic Charity in a Golden Age: Orphan Care in Early Modern Amsterdam, was published by the University of Illinois Press in 1997. She is a former Truman Scholar, and has served on the foundation’s national selection committee.
