To Members of the MIT Community:
I write to invite you to attend this spring's Karl Taylor Compton
Lecture, which will be delivered by the Honorable Senator Edward
M. Kennedy on Friday, April 13.
The Karl Taylor Compton Lecture series was inaugurated in 1957 to
honor the late Karl Taylor Compton, who served as president of MIT
from 1930-48 and chairman of the MIT Corporation from 1948-54. The
oldest, best known, and perhaps the most distinguished of MIT
lectureships, the Compton lectures were established "to bring to MIT
some of the great minds on the world scene." Senator Kennedy's lecture
marks a new beginning for this historic series after a hiatus of
several years.
It is particularly fitting that Senator Kennedy should deliver the
first in the revival of the Compton Lectures: not only is he one of
the leading figures in American public life, but he has also been a
steadfast advocate for education and research throughout his
distinguished career. His lecture, "A Life in Public Service," will
take place at 2:30 p.m. this Friday in the Stata Center's Kirsch
Auditorium (Room 32-123) and is open to members of the MIT community.
I hope to see you there.
Sincerely,
Susan Hockfield
