Dear postdocs,
Thanks to those of you who have responded so far to our request for
help to organize this year's Biology IAP symposia, but we still
need more volunteers. Several of you have asked what the
commitments are. Basically, we need people to be 'Session Chairs',
which would involve coordinating 2-4 speakers for one or two
sessions during IAP. This would involve some time now emailing and
scheduling/inviting speakers (we have lists of people so that you
don't need to worry about knowing people ahead of time).
During IAP, you would moderate the session, introducing the speakers
(either roundtable or short presentation format - you decide) and
managing audience questions.
Below are the list of sessions we are preparing for:
ACADEMIC LIFE
Life as a postdoc
Balancing Family and Science
Women in Science
Grant Writing
Finding faculty positions
Academic Teaching opportunities
Choosing a postdoc/finding postdoc funding
ALTERNATIVE CAREERS IN BIOLOGY
Editing/Publishing
Biotech/Pharma
Science Administration
Venture Capital
Consulting
Law
In addition we are also having a scientific symposium series in which leading
scientists from the Boston area will be invited to come speak about
'Protein Technologies and Proteomics'. We are also looking for volunteers
to contact and schedule these speakers.
This is a great opportunity for you to be able to meet many interesting
people and faculty from around the MIT and greater Boston area and I
encourage anyone who is interested to email me back with what sessions
you'd be most interesting in chairing.
Thank you for your time and attention,
-Peter Chien
