THIS MESSAGE IS FOR MIT PhDs OR POSTDOCS

Dear MIT PhDs and Post-docs,

On behalf of the Boston Consulting Group, I wanted to take the
opportunity to introduce myself to you. My name is Mel Wolfgang, and
I am a Manager with BCG in our Boston office. I have been with BCG
since 1999, and I came to the Boston office after completing a PhD in
computational hydrodynamics from the Department of Ocean Engineering
at MIT. Six years ago, I was in a similar position to where many of
you are likely to be right now. I was finishing my dissertation,
excited about the prospect of completing a long journey, and I was
contemplating several career options. These ranged from staying in
academia, starting a business, or entering the world of management
consulting to "get my feet wet" and learn as much as possible about
the business world.

Five years later, I am still at BCG, having spent time working out of
Boston, Kuala Lumpur, and London. I adore my job. And I am
energized by the prospect of bringing more qualified PhDs, MDs and
other "non-traditional" hires into what I truly believe is a
wonderful firm and into an incredibly rewarding role in consulting.

I am sure some of you are considering consulting quite seriously and
want to know BCG better. I am equally sure that there are others of
you who are trying to understand what the job is all about and what
it is you want to do - in both the short term and ultimately in the
long term. For that reason, I am going to be holding office hours on
campus to answer whatever questions you may have - about BCG, about
my personal experiences, the consulting profession, the transition
from academia into consulting, the transition from consulting into
other careers.

If you are interested in stopping by for 15 minutes or so to talk, on
Fri., Sept. 24, at a time when I will be on campus (11am-3pm),
please click on the link below to set up a time.

Best of luck in the career search, and I look forward to meeting many
of you over the coming weeks and months.

Best regards,
Mel Wolfgang
