Dear Administrative staff, Research staff, Support Staff and Post-docs,

I would like to invite you to help us update our understanding of
staff quality of life concerns and suggestions. We know how
important quality of life is to the morale and, therefore, retention
of employees.

In June of 2003, the Chair of the Faculty and I created a Staff
Quality of Life Committee, co-chaired by Prof. Tom Kochan, Sloan
School of Management, and Francine Crystal, Human Resources, to
further analyze the results of the 2001 Staff Quality of Life survey.
Approximately one-third of MIT's 9000 staff members took the time to
respond to this survey. Their responses indicate that we have much to
be proud of as an employer and as a community. As in all
organizations, however, there are opportunities for improvement. The
work of this committee will ensure that we respond creatively and
appropriately to these opportunities.

The committee's first task was to make recommendations regarding
three specific needs identified by the survey: back up child care;
elder care; and clarification of the severe weather policy. These
recommendations are being reviewed by Human Resources.

I am now asking the committee to update our understanding of staff
satisfaction with quality of life at MIT. To that end, the committee
has scheduled a number of focus groups. In these sessions,
participants will have an opportunity to discuss those aspects of
quality of life at MIT with which they are most satisfied as well as
those with which they are least satisfied. This will also be an
opportunity to suggest strategies, policies and programs which would
increase satisfaction.

Please RSVP to Francine Crystal (fcrystal at mit.edu) if you are able to
attend one of the sessions below. Each session will accommodate
fifteen participants. Additional respondents will be able to submit
comments electronically.

Thank you for your participation in this effort and your on-going
commitment to MIT.

Sincerely,
Laura Avakian
Vice President for Human Resources
