Hi everyone,
Below is a summary of what we discussed at the Habitat GBM last week.
Shoot me an email if you'd like to help out with Campus Build (planning,
helping out on the day of, etc.).
Cheers,
Grace
*MIT HABITAT FOR HUMANITY CLUB
Spring General Body Meeting - March 5, 2009
Summary*
*I. Campus Build/Shanty Town*
Friday, April 24 - Spring Weekend!
There will be three main components to this event, all happening
simultaneously around Kresge.
*1. Campus Build*
We will be constructing a demo window frame (showcasing the
energy-efficient structure that meets LEED standards) for Habitat for
Humanity of Greater Lowell. Lowell is currently thinking of other
projects for us, and I will be contacting other local affiliates. We
will be building right behind Kresge Auditorium, on the bricks facing
the Z center. People will be able to drop by any time on Friday to
swing a hammer and lend a hand!
*2. Shanty Town*
8 teams of 4-5 students will build houses out of cardboard and duct tape
right in the middle of Kresge Oval! Teams will have all day to work on
their houses, and the judges (a panel of professors, including
architecture professors) will choose the most robust house at 7pm.
*3. Awareness*
On Kresge Lawn, the area between Kresge Auditorium and the Z center, we
will have a barbecue starting at around 4 or 5pm. We will also set up
several booths to distribute information about Habitat for Humanity and
the need for affordable housing. One of the booths will be run by
participants in our spring break trip, while another booth will have a
Build Louder display (advocatewithhabitat.org).
** Publicity*
Email, flyers, Lobby 7 drop panel, Infinite Corridor panel, Tech ad,
Tech article/photographer, Dome View, Habitat website, spotlight on MIT
homepage, MIT events calendar, Boston Globe, any other ideas?
*II. Habitat Benefit Concert*
Overall, it was pretty successful - we had an attendance of 50 people, a
respectable number given that this was our first concert. The groups
really enjoyed performing for us, and offered to perform again next year
if the variety show becomes an annual event. The concert, and it's
advertising campaign, was successful in getting our name out on campus.
We are definitely considering making it an annual event, perhaps the
third Friday in February. Any other comments/suggestions?
*III. Build Days*
