The *MIT Habitat for Humanity club*'s annual *Campus Build* will be this
*Friday, April 24* in Kresge Oval! (See the bottom of the email for how
you can volunteer to help out!)
*Here's what's in store for the day:*
*1. Cardboard House Building Competition!*
The response was much greater than we expected, so we will be expanding
the competition to 10 teams of 4-5 students. Teams will start building
their houses in Kresge Oval at 10am. The judges will arrive at 6pm to
start looking at the houses and talking to the teams, and the winning
team will be announced at 7pm. The judges include 3 professors from
Course 4 (Architecture), including the head of the department, and Jim
Comeau, the construction supervisor from Habitat for Humanity of Greater
Lowell.
*2. Picnic Tables for Habitat for Humanity of Greater Lowell*
We will build five 6-ft long picnic tables on the bricks behind Kresge
Auditorium (facing the Z center) starting at 11am. We will precut and
predrill the wood on Wednesday, so most of the work will be nailing and
screwing the pieces together. Anyone can drop by to help out! Tell
your friends to swing by for a couple of minutes or a couple of hours -
all are welcome!
*3. Free catered barbecue dinner*
At 5pm in the BBQ pits (the lawn between Kresge Auditorium and dorm
row), we will have a free barbecue dinner open to all members of the MIT
community (ie. everyone)! We will also have booths set up nearby with
photos from Habitat trips and information about Habitat for Humanity
International.
*How can I volunteer to help out?*
We will need help on Wednesday morning (tomorrow) from 9:30 through 1pm,
as we will be pre-cutting and pre-drilling the wood for the picnic
tables in the Hobby Shop (duPont). No experience with carpentry is
required - we'll teach you everything you need to know. Plus, you'd get
a chance to explore the really cool Hobby Shop facilities.
We will also need help all day on Friday, from 8:30am to 8pm. Set-up
will be from 8:30am-10am, the cardboard house construction will be from
10am-7pm, picnic table construction will be from 11am-6pm, and clean-up
will be from 7:30pm-8pm. If you volunteer sometime between 10am-7pm,
you will most likely be asked to supervise/participate in picnic table
construction or supervise the cardboard house competition.
Also, all Habitat volunteers get a *free Campus Build t-shirt!*
*Email me back with the day (Wed and/or Fri) and the times that you can
help out.* I hope to see you at Campus Build on Friday! (The weather
is supposed to be beautiful!!)
Cheers,
Grace Lee
