[mit-habitat] NOTES FROM HABITAT MEETING!

Hey everyone... Thanks to those who came to the meeting and thanks to everyone
who is interested in what went on at the meeting even though you couldn't make
it!  The following information explains what we discussed at the meeting.

WORKDAYS
  -The 2 we have had so far were very successful and pretty much full to
capacity (14 volunteers for the Jan. one and 12 for the Feb. one)

ROW FOR HUMANITY
  -Fundraiser... did not have to do much, only sat at a booth with a flyer and
we got 10% of profit!  We are not sure but we think this will be about $100.
  -Idea for next year: Have someone from Habitat Row, get sponsored and raise
money.  Basically, get us more involved.

REMAINING WORKDAYS
  -March 18, April 15

FUNDRAISER
  -Jeff and Rishi are in charge of this
  -The businesses we plan to approach for donations are: Starbucks, Dunkin
Donuts, Au Bon Pain, Friendly?s, LaVerdes, Alpine, Lobdell, Mike?s
Pastries, Star, and Rebecca?s
  -Some of these businesses have already been contacted.  The rest, Jeff and
Rishi will contact or email out phone numbers of the places for other people to
call
  -The date planned is March 17 (yes, St. Patrick's Day!)
  -This will be the definite date as long as we can reserve a booth in Lobby 10
  -We also want to set up another booth in Sloan
  -Sign-ups to work at the booths will be sent out closer to the date
  -The food will either be picked up the night before or day of by car or foot
and hopefully set up by 9:00 a.m.
  -A drop poster needs to be made for Lobby 7 (anyone interested in doing that,
let us know!)
  -An ad will be put in the Tech (Lindsey's job!)
  -Emails will be sent out to advertise
  -Someone may hand out pamphlets
  -We made about $400 doing this fundraiser last year.
  -Our goal: MAKE MORE MONEY!!!  AND ADVERTISE MORE!!!

CAMPUS BUILD
  -Mike is in charge of this
  -When: SPRING WEEKEND!!  APRIL 29!!!
  -Emerson (the head guy at Habitat in Lawrence) has been contacted.  He wants
us to build walls.
  -Need to reserve the Kresge bbq pits (Elyse's job!)
  -Need to devise a plan in case of bad weather (Elyses's job!)
  -Need to get wood donated

SLEEP-OUT
  -Lindsey and Elyse are in charge of this
  -When: May 6th and 7th
  -Need to contact police to make sure it is okay to hold in Boston Commons
  -If Boston Commons does not work, we will hold it on campus
  -BU and Tufts have expressed interest in collaborating with us.  Need to
follow up with them and look into a few more schools
  -Goals: Raise money, Raise awareness about poverty and Habitat
  -Most of the money raised will go to the Habitat chapter in Lawrence.
  -Activities:
     -Speakers (homeowners from Habitat, Habitat workers)
     -Pamphlets to hand out with information
     -People who sleep out get sponsored (certain amt of money for every hr they
are outside)
     -Mini service project while there (make hygiene kits or something else
while sleeping out to be distributed later)- Thanks Nisha!
    -Contests that are building oriented with prizes (ie: trying to hit a nail
in one shot with different kinds of hammers)
  -Media
     -Tech
     -Cambridge newspaper
     -Boston newspaper
     -News station!

So that's it.  It's a little long but it shows how productive we were!  Goood
work everyone.
