Subject: Construction Update/Training Series

 Hello all Habitat Volunteers,

Well, it is now mid-April and our building season is in full swing. We are
launching a series of Construction Training Courses for the spring and
summer months. The trainings will cover topics that coincide with our
current construction activities. You'll be able to use your new knowledge in
the field! Classes are open to committed volunteers. Please contact our
VISTA Construction Assistant to reserve a spot.

Construction Update:

Market Street Common:

We continue our work on Market Street Common rehab projects. Cedar and
hardiplank siding will be going up this weekend.

8-10 Gale Street (duplex):

If all goes well, the foundation for our Gale Street site should be
completed by mid-April. Framing and layout will begin early May.

Melrose Street-Builders Blitz June 5th-June 9th:

For the first time ever, Merrimack Valley Habitat for Humanity will be
participating in Habitat International's Builders Blitz. Local,
professional builders have stepped up to build an entire house in one week.
Volunteers will be helping with the hospitality tent this week, but no
volunteers will be involved with the actual construction. We're leaving it
to the professionals.

Construction Training Calendar:

April 20th: Wall Layout & Framing 5:00 @ WAREHOUSE Habitat's Construction
Director, Emerson Dahmen, will teach basic stud layout strategies: how to
frame door and window rough openings, account for interior and exterior wall
intersections, and tricks to keeping wall sections square and plumb. The
class will be held in our new panelizing SHOP (The SHOP is in the same
building as our current warehouse on Metheun Street in Lawrence.)

April 29th: Bostitch Pneumatic Gun Safety Training 3:00 p.m. @ site TBA
Our Bostitch rep, Hank Bruckner, will be demonstrating how to properly and
safely use framing nailers and finish nailers. This class is mandatory for
any Habitat volunteers that want to use a pneumatic gun on-site. (Note:
there will be other limitations to using pneumatic guns on site as well)

May 25th: Grace Product Door/Window/Deck and Roof Flashing 5:00 p.m. @ 10
Gale Street Our Grace Building Materials rep., Gerry Bay, will be
demonstrating the latest products and strategies for flashing windows, doors
and roofs. Learn how to protect the most leak prone areas of your house.

Group leaders-please spread the word on our trainings to your volunteers.

We'll be adding more trainings in time.
