Dear Student Group Officers,
Important changes are occurring in the ASA! As discussed at the fall ASA General Body
Meeting, and in a meeting in December to which all student groups were invited, the ASA
is being redefined so that it might better fulfill its role as a voice for student
groups and a joint committee of the Graduate Student Council (GSC) and Undergraduate
Association (UA). The goal is to complete this process by April.
Based largely upon feedback from student groups who attended the December meeting, the UA,
GSC, and ASA have worked together to propose the following documents. The first document,
available at: <http://web.mit.edu/asa/www/UA-GSCbylaws.pdf> defines the purpose and
structure of the ASA and would appear as a part of the UA and GSC Bylaws. As with any
other changes of the UA and GSC Bylaws, these changes will be voted upon by the UA Senate
and GSC Council, respectively. The GSC will vote on March 2nd, and the UA at its March
14th Senate Meeting. Upon the adoption of these bylaws, the ASA will function under the
operating guidelines that appear here:
http://web.mit.edu/asa/www/ASAoperatingguidelines.pdf.
These Operating Guidelines incorporate the current ASA Constitution, the current standing
policies space reallocation procedure and the current bulletin board reallocation
procedure. No significant changes were made in any of the policies of these documents -
they are just now all collected together into the Operating Guidelines.
The ASA, UA, and GSC request your feedback on the documents. Please note that there will
not necessarily be a General Body Meeting to put these changes into effect because once
amended into the bylaws of the UA and the GSC, they are considered functional. Thus, it
is VERY important that you provide us with any comments or concerns you might have as soon
as possible.
Please direct all emails to asa-exec at mit.edu <mailto:asa-exec at mit.edu> with "UA/GSC
Bylaws" in the title.
Sincerely,
The ASA Executive Board
