Hey everyone!

Using the precendent set by Radhika, here is one long email...

First, the workday yesterday went well. We had about 14 people go and we got
all muddy digging a pathway and then filling it up with stone dust, and some of
the guys did siding. (c:

Second, I attended the Boston YU meeting on Thursday and here is what I learned:
YU is a new national intiative from Habitat International to encourage more
youth (ages 5-25) to become involved in Habitat. YU is broken down into local
areas so there is a YU Boston, YU New York, YU Chicago, etc. Basically, there
are two goals: raise money ($75K) to build a Boston house and also educate kids
and get them involved in fundraising and working on the site. Mae(Harvard) is
spearheading the YU Boston group. There were also representatives from Harvard,
BU, Olin College, and some high school that I forget the name of at the meeting.
There are different positions on board (Prez, VP, Education Director, Special
Events director, Publicity director, etc.) and the director's school chapter is
supposed to help specifically with whatever the director is in charge of. For
example, the Special Events director (who is in charge for this kickoff event in
April...more on that later) is from Olin College and she is supposed to get her
school chapter involved in planning the kickoff event.
I signed up as the Community Outreach director which involves contacting high
schools and elementary schools in the Boston area and informing them about YU
activities. The Education director will then setup a Habitat seminar or workday
for the kids to teach them about affordable housing issues and how they can help
with Habitat.
Currently the core exective board has been created. There are also committees
(Education, Fundraising, Publicity, etc.) that people can sign up for if they
want a smaller committment. Since one of the goals is to get youth involved,
they are hoping to get some high school/elementary students on the committees.
There will be a National YU celebratory week during the second week of April
which will be this huge shindig. Every YU chapter across the nation will be
participating. Mae really wants Millard Fuller (the found of Habitat) to speak
at the event. The preliminary goal is to raise $25K by April so there will also
be a fundraising event every month. In parallel with that, YU Boston will be
working with high schools and elementary schools.
Habitat International is also awarding five $5K grants to the best YU
groups...basically get the different YU groups to work hard to do stuff.
There is no budget so they are asking that each college chapter donates $100.

So we have to discuss how much involved we want to be in YU Boston. I
personally think it sounds like a cool idea with regards to the Community
Outreach/Education piece which is why I signed up as one of the directors. The
fundraising is the usual bit and MIT Habitat is not required to help out with YU
Boston's fundraisers or anything. I mean, we have a pretty busy agenda already.
But I think our members might be interested in talking to local schools and
youth about Habitat. It's something different from fundraising and workdays.
But, we would have to make the $100 donation.

Also, Mae mentioned that Harvard Habitat raised $38K(!) from doing some kind of
flea market fundraiser...I'll ask her for more details but I think the general
gist is that they collected old furntiture, etc. during the year and at the
beginning of the school year, they had a huge garage sale. Anyway, interesting
point considering how much money they raised.

phew! I think that's everything.

Let me know what you think so I can let Mae know what we want to do. Thanks!

~Neha
