Hi Arthur,

Since McAfee Security installs a number of files in a variety of places around your Mac, you probably still have a number of McAfee Security application resources on your Mac despite your best efforts to remove them.

I think your best bet would be to perform a complete uninstallation of McAfee Security from the command line, using these instructions from http://kb.mit.edu/confluence/x/fwZa, and then reinstalling using the latest version from the IS&T Software Grid.

  1. In the Terminal window, type the following command and press return. /usr/local/McAfee/uninstallMSC
  2. When prompted, enter your password and press return.
Result: When the uninstallation process completes, the Terminal displays a message stating that McAfee Security is uninstalled from your Mac.
  3. To completely uninstall McAfee Security, you must also remove the McAfee Agent. To uninstall the McAfee Agent, type the following command and press return.
sudo /Library/McAfee/cma/uninstall.sh
  4. When prompted, enter your password and press return.

Good luck, and I hope this helps.

this installed well on my macbook pro, running os X 6.8, but it won't update the anti-malware. in fact it hasn't updated it since 2011. moreover, there are 2 mcafee logos in the top tool bar (the one with the date and time, etc.) --both logos say the same thing in "about mcafee." i did have 2 versions of mcafee security on this computer, but i have trashed the older ones and (i think) all their ancillary files. i have also emptied trash.

does anyone have any ideas about how to correct this?
