[Macpartners] problem finding the network wirelessly

i am using a macbook pro (2.7 ghz, intel core i7) with os X.6.8.  recently (last week) i downloaded and installed a bunch of software updates that included a firmware one.  ever since then, when i first open the laptop each day it spends about 1-2 minutes looking for the network. i can sort of live with this, but wonder if there is a way to correct this annoyance.
