Hi Arthur--

If you have a MacBook Pro with a mini-display port, and your TV has an
available HDMI port, I would get the mini-DP to HDMI adapter from the
Apple Store ($35):

This will carry both video and audio to your TV.  Y

ou could also use a mini-display to VGA/DVI adapter, but you would also
have to use a stereo-mini cable to go from the headphone jack on your
MacBook to an available audio port on your TV or receiver.

Since you'll have to invest money either way, a Roku might be a better
tool for the job:

they start at around $50 and can stream content from Netflix, Amazon and a
host of other sources.
