Hey Steve,
Those scripts appear to do the trick, although the first script only checks Safari, and not Firefox (which may or not be an issue).
Another option might be this Flashback checker app, available for download from github, which runs the same three Terminal commands, including the check for Firefox: https://github.com/jils/FlashbackChecker/wiki
