[Macpartners] FireFox 8 ?

Hi Marion--

IS&T is currently only supporting Firefox 3.6.24 because in March, with the release of Firefox 4, Mozilla moved to a rapid release model for the browser. This rapid release model was selected to create faster iterations of the browser to improve the load times of the application, websites, and the end-user experience from a customer perspective.

This rapid release model forces users from one version to the next usually without any end-user intervention.  This can result in difficulty accessing certain websites until they are 'brought up-to-speed' code-wise and is unfriendly to corporate environments with intranet sites.  Although we don't like to think of MIT as corporate, we have many intranet-type sites (SAP, Stellar, etc) that are critical to the functioning of the Institute and should a rapid release version prevent a user from accessing one of these sites, it could be potentially catastrophic to an end-user and create a significant impact on our ability to create the best IT experience at MIT.

We are currently investigating implementing automation tools to increase our ability to support the rapid release model and browsers here at MIT.

I guess I'm very out of it: Firefox wants me to upgrade to FF 8.  I'm on FF 3.6.24, and I thought that's the highest level MIT IS&T is supporting.

Shall I move to FF8, or stay where I am?
