Hi,
A 10.5 user asked me to assist due to the fact that her Mail.app will not allow her to search on "Entire Message". Actually, she can search on "Entire Message" but she will get no results due to Spotlight not indexing.
I tried the easy steps first, asking spotlight to exclude then include the mail folder (in her library) via spotlight system prefs. No results. Looking "under the hood" into this issue I found a few instances where people remove .Spotlight-V100 and rebuild the indexes by starting mdutil from the command line using sudo. Others suggest making sure .metadata_never_index is not in the root directory. In her case I whacked her .Spotlight-V100 folder and ensured the was no .metadata_* and attempted to stop/start mdutil, which always responds with "/: indexing disabled".
What can I do (aside from updating to 10.6 and/or buying an iPad 2) to try and resolve this.
Does it matter that she has a bootcamp partition?
Please help me keep her on the happy mac user side of her computer, she's been so happy since she "switched"!
Thank you,
Aran
