Hello Aran,
1) - Make sure your system's firewall is turned on (System Preferences -> Security).
2) - Run "Software Update" often to make sure you have the latest security patches.
3) - Heed the warnings that OS X generates automatically regarding opening files/applications downloaded from the Internet.
4) - Don't let your email program download or open attachments automatically. Never open any attachments unless you know the sender and are expecting that specific attachment from them.
5) - Never enter your passwords or other personal information unless you're certain of the site . Use unique passwords for really important sites (Athena, banking, etc.).
With OS X, there's much less of a threat from malware than that "other operating system". Personally, I think common sense is the best solution and that so-called "antivirus" programs cause more trouble than they're worth. Some are downright evil! I never use them and I've never have problems with malware on OS X.
If you disagree, I'd love to hear about it.
