In addition Brian's suggestion, another avenue for investigation is mentioned in the archives of the "kerberos at mit.edu" discussion list:

Someone asked about an issue very much like yours, and the reply was that kinit might be trying to use a credential cache service that isn't yet launched. If you determine that this is the case, you might be able to work around it by compiling a local kinit binary which could get tickets without needing the CCacheServer.
