Good afternoon,
Information Services & Technology (IS&T) has chartered a Macintosh
Virtualization Evaluation Team to review the need for and use of
virtualization technology in the MIT community - with a particular
focus on
Parallels and VMware Fusion. Such virtualization software allows
Intel-based Macintosh computers to run "guest" operating systems, such
as
Windows XP, Vista, and Linux, simultaneously with Macintosh OS X.
During the evaluation process, the team will address a number of areas,
including: customer requirements, associated costs, licensing options
provided by vendors, and available technologies. At the end of the
project,
the team will recommend the level of support that IS&T should provide
for
virtualization on Macintosh computers.
Input from the MIT community is critical to the success of this project.
For this reason, we are inviting anyone interested in virtualization
on the
Macintosh to attend one of our upcoming outreach sessions:
Wednesday, December 5, 2007, 3:00 pm - 4:00 pm in N42 Demo Center
Thursday, December 6, 2007, Noon - 1:00 pm in 32-141 ( Stata Center )
The purpose of these sessions is to help the team understand what the
MIT
community is doing with virtualization on the Macintosh and gauge user
needs
over the next few years.
The team will post updates throughout the evaluation process on our
Virtualization Evaluation Release Notebook, which you can find at:

If you have questions or comments please contact the team via email at
virtualization-eval at mit.edu.
