Hi Allan,
MIT's general recommendation is three-year Applecare for Apple
desktops and notebooks. However, while this is often what MIT-
purchased systems are ordered with it is not a requirement and folks
also occasionally purchase systems with shorter warranties.
Regarding a replacement drive, if you need an official Apple part the
service center at our Help Desk that deals with repairs can order a
part for you from Apple (http://web.mit.edu/ist/helpdesk/hwsw/).
There may also be cheaper options out there if you are considering
third-party parts as alternatives. If you have a particular third-
party drive in mind, checking GovConnection (http://web.mit.edu/ecat/
govconnection/) to see their MIT-discounted price is often worthwhile.
Cheers,
Oliver
