Good afternoon,
Based on feedback from the growing number of mobile device users within the
MIT community, Information Services & Technology (IS&T) is pleased to
announce official support for Windows Mobile devices. The support will cover
the Windows Mobile 5 Pocket PC/Smartphone and Windows Mobile 6
Professional/Standard devices.
NOTABLE FEATURES
-------------------------------
Windows Mobile devices offer several features of interest to mobile users.
These include:
1. A wide variety of Microsoft and third-party applications compatible with
MIT's applications
2. More device availability from major carriers
3. Support of MIT certificates
4. Wi-Fi connection to MITnet is supported on many Windows Mobile devices
5. MIT-provided SyncML at no charge - for synchronizing with TechTime
SUPPORT AVAILABLE
-------------------------------
The following features of mobile devices will be supported by IS&T:
1. Windows Mobile and Palm OS operating systems on mobile devices
2. Email on these platforms
3. SyncML application for wireless synchronization of calendar events with
MIT's TechTime Server on these platforms
4. Wi-Fi connection to MITnet on these platforms
Note: IS&T will continue to support Palm OS devices for the foreseeable
future. However, given the trends in the mobile device industry, IS&T does
not recommend Palm OS for those purchasing a new mobile device.
In addition, IS&T continues to test and evaluate the following within the
MIT environment: Apple's iPhone and Research In Motion's BlackBerry 8830
World Edition smartphone. At this time, IS&T is planning to provide limited
support for the iPhone and the BlackBerry World Edition within the next few
months.
