Good afternoon,
In testing Mac OS X 10.4 (Tiger), we have uncovered a few problems
that we feel are important enough to share now rather than waiting
until the end of the evaluation. Mac OS X 10.4 is a major operating
system change and problems are to be expected, especially during the
first few months as vendors scramble to fix issues in their applications.
At this time, we recommend that clients NOT upgrade to Tiger on
production machines as these problems do not have solutions yet.
The four major problems found so far that effect the MIT environment are:
1. SAPgui version 6.20 rev 8 does not run correctly under
Tiger. While the application may launch, underlying functions do not
work correctly or may crash SAPgui. SAP and Apple are working to
address this issue and IS&T is monitoring the situation.
2. MIT's Cisco VPN client conflicts with Tiger. Cisco and Apple have
been working on the problem, but were unable to resolve the issue
prior to Tiger being released. IS&T will continue to monitor the
work between the vendors and expects to have something better to
report by the beginning of June.
3. OpenAFS does not have a version available for Tiger yet. If you
use OpenAFS on Mac OS X 10.3 and upgrade to Tiger, it will not work
in most situations. A new version of OpenAFS for Tiger is expected
in the future. While IS&T support for OpenAFS is focused on the
Linux platform, we are sharing this information since we know some of
the Macintosh community also use OpenAFS.
4. Kerberized login window support is broken in Tiger. Machines
configured to get Kerberos tickets on login will not allow any login
to the machine if upgraded to Tiger. The MIT Kerberos Team and Apple
are working together to resolve this issue as quickly as possible.
More information on these and other issues can be found in the Mac OS
X 10.4 (Tiger) Release Notebook at:
http://web.mit.edu/swrt/releases/macosx10.4/
The Mac OS X Release Team continues to test Tiger in the MIT
environment and will provide a more complete update and
recommendation by the beginning of June.
Thanks,
Jon
