[Macpartners] Antisocial Behavior of Word 2003

I wonder if this is common. A student sent me by email attachment a thesis
(187 pages, about 1 Mbyte). This had been created on a Windows machine
running Word 2003 edition. I edited the file using my ibook running under
Panther with the Microsoft office for OS-10. When I sent the file back to
the student he could not open it. Word would start, displaying the first
page, but then would crash when it reached the end of the file. This
happened even if I turned it into an .rtf file.

This seems like very bad behavior but then what to expect of microsoft? Any
words of wisdom/workaround?
