[Macpartners] Mac OS X 10.3.9 update problems (unable to write to /tmp)

Finally, I, too, run into a problem with this update after a roll. I've got a
QuickSilver G4 that refuses to install 10.3.9. After the update is downloaded
and it begins to expand it, Software Update stalls with the error

The update "Mac OS X Update Combined" could not be verified and expanded
correctly.

Make sure you have permission to write to
/tmp/501/TemporaryItems/com.apple.SoftwareUpdate, then try again.

I have full privileges (rwx) on the /tmp dir and below, and the owner is indeed
UID 501 with which I am logged in.

This is a brand new, clean 10.3 install, just in the process of being updated. I
already did a full Repair Permissions on the boot (and only) drive.

Suggestions?
