Launching the Network preference panel shows the network status for the 
active ports for the location that you've selected. If the ethernet 
port is active, the Network preference panel will show whether the 
ethernet cable is plugged in or not.

If you want more details on network activity, Network Utility (in the 
/Applications/Utilities) will give you that information.
