Subject: Netscape 7.02 Release to MIT
Information Systems is pleased to announce the availability and
support of Netscape 7.02 with an MIT installer and customizations,
for Macintosh and Windows platforms. Netscape Navigator is supported
at MIT for Macintosh and Windows systems.
Note on Support and De-support
------------------------------
For Netscape, MIT supports only the Navigator web browser, even
though other components are included with the MIT installer (Mail &
Newsgroups, Instant Messenger, Composer, and Address Book).
As of June 30, 2003, MIT no longer supports the following:
-- Netscape Messenger/Mail as an e-mail client.
-- Netscape 4.78 or earlier
About Netscape 7.02 for MIT
----------------------------
The MIT Netscape installers incorporate settings pre-configured for
MIT use, and include the MIT CA (Certificate Authority). Also
included are MIT-customized Bookmarks. For more about the MIT
customizations, see the Readme file included with the MIT installer,
or see Netscape at MIT, at
http://itinfo.mit.edu/product?name=netscape.
New Features in Netscape 7.02
------------------------------
-- Performance, stability, and security enhancements
-- Popup window controls, only on Windows platform
-- Home page group
-- Print preview and page setup
-- Tabbed browsing and bookmark groups
-- Click-to-search
-- Search tooltips in My Sidebar
-- Download manager
-- New Macromedia Flash 6 r65 plug-in for Windows
-- New Java 1.4.0_03 plug-in for Windows
Who Should Upgrade and Why
--------------------------
We recommend that all Netscape users upgrade to Netscape 7.02,
especially users of Netscape 4.78. Our testing has found 7.02 to be
more reliable, stable, and faster, especially on the Macintosh. Our
testing indicates that most of the problems experienced with Netscape
6.2.3 are not present in 7.02. We recommend to NOT revert back to
Netscape 6.2.3 after Netscape 7 has been installed.
Known Issues
------------
-- On Windows 2000 and XP, you must be logged on as an Administrator
in order to install Netscape.
-- Macintosh OS X users can install Netscape under an Administrator
account or a User account. If installing under a User account,
Netscape must be installed in that user's home directory.
-- On Windows, if the current version is Netscape 6, the default
installation of Netscape 7 will overwrite the previous version. If
you wish to keep the old version, designate another directory for
Netscape 7.
-- On Mac OS 9.x, if you are upgrading from Netscape 4.78, your
personal certificate will not be migrated from the old to the new
version. After installing Netscape 7.02, you will need to get a new
MIT personal certificate.
