Mac users are unable to mount \\sloannt1\courses because of a configuration setting on the server. This server appears to be running Windows Server 2003, and is configured to refuse SMB connections unless they are encrypted. Encryption is not yet part of the SMB standard, and is therefore not supported by Macs. The other server we use at sloan (\\sloanfiles\) does not require encrypted SMB connections, and is accessible to Mac users. Is it possible to configure the \\sloannt1\ server to match the other server and accept unencrypted SMB traffic? If so, here is the procedure: 1) From Administrative Tools, open Domain Controller Security Settings. Go to Local Policies then Security Options. 2) Scroll down to find the entry Microsoft network server: Digitally sign communications (always). Set this to Disabled. 3) The only thing left to do is to reload the security policy, as changes don?t otherwise take effect for some time. Open up a command window and type: gpupdate Please let me know if this is not possible, or if it doesn't work. Thank you in advance for your time. - John Harthorne MBA 2007 -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... At the moment, it is not possible for mac users to connect to the sloannt1 server because it is configured to require encrypted SMB traffic. Encryption is not part of the standard protocol, so Apple doesn't support it (but Microsoft does). I have already asked the STS folks to change the configuration so that we can connect. They are thinking it over and determining whether policy permits the change. I'll let everyone know when they make a decision. Eventually, it will be the same username/password as for the other server. I have been able to print on all the printers despite that problem. Are you having difficulties with one printer, or all of them? I had accidentally sent out the wrong instructions for the Tang Lab printers (I think). They should be setup as LPD printers (not IP printers as my email suggested). If that was the only tricky printer, try setting it up again. If all printers are giving you trouble, let me know. It may be something unique to you, or it might mean that all of my instructions were wrong! egad. Anyway, let me know how it goes. - John On Sep 12, 2005, at 12:09 PM, Alona Zaitzeff wrote: > Hi John, > I had a quick question that I was hoping you could help me out > with. If you're one, would you mind replying to me? Please include if you're a first year or second year. For those who are interested, I'll send the tally out to the list. Thanks! -j From jharthorne at sloan.mit.edu Thu Sep 22 17:05:10 2005 From: jharthorne at sloan.mit.edu (John Harthorne) Date: Thu, 22 Sep 2005 17:05:10 -0400 Subject: [Macinsloan] Mounting File Servers Message-ID: All, I am now able to mount all 3 shares on the 2 Sloan File Servers. Previously, I had not been able to connect to the sloannt1 server due to a Mac/Windows compatibility issue. I put in a reconfiguration request to the IT folks, and it looks like they came through. I am not aware of anything that I cannot do at Sloan with my Mac now! Here is the procedure to mount the shared folders: From within the Finder: 1) Select Go > Connect to Server ... (Command+K is the shortcut) 2) Enter Server Address in the format smb://SERVER/SHARE (see below for server and share names) 3) Click connect 4) Enter your username and password when prompted. Enter "sloanlab" as the workgroup (no quotes). 5) Check the "Remember this password in my keychain" box if you want your password remembered 6) Click OK The shared folder should now appear as a disk within the Finder. The three relevant shares should be entered as follows: smb://sloannt1/courses smb://sloanfiles/mba07 smb://sloanfiles/temp2 Time saving tip: In the initial "Connect to Server" dialog, you can click the "plus" icon to the right of the location to add that server to your "favorite" locations. That way, you won't have to type each location out every time you connect. If you have opted to save your password in the keychain, all you need to do is double click the location to connect to it. Let me know if you have troubles with these directions ... and remember to say thank you to the IT support personnel. This would not be possible without their help. - John -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed...
