Assistant Professor, tenure track (qualification agreement)
Fulltime, 40 hours/week

Please note that under the terms of the WU personnel development plan, the position of Assistant Professor, tenure track, is limited to an employment period of not more than six years. For this position, a qualification agreement can be considered after a period of two years, pursuant to § 27 of the Collective Bargaining Agreement (Kollektivvertrag für die ArbeitnehmerInnen der Universitäten). After successful fulfillment of any qualification agreement made, employment can be made permanent. From the perspective of organizational regulations, employees who have successfully completed a qualification agreement are to be classified as full professors.

Your responsibilities:

Digital transformation in the context of supply chain management offers enormous potential for supporting managerial decision-making. Analyzing and modeling real-life problems using state-of-the-art quantitative methods and empirical data allows for improved governance and optimization of inter-company and intra-company product, monetary and information flows. However, digital transformation of supply chains comes with significant challenges including the acquisition of analytical capabilities and intelligence to make effective use of large amounts of data & information. The opportunities and challenges of digital transformation open up an exciting field of research in the domain of Supply Chain Management.
The new tenure track position “Supply Chain Analytics” is dedicated to exploring and shaping this field of research. With its focus on data analytics, it aims at elucidating questions of the impact of digital transformation on the design and operation of supply chains. The successful applicant is expected to cultivate an environment of excellence and collaboration to contribute to the research, teaching, and service activities of the Institute of Transport and Logistics Management. He/she will conduct research in the area of Supply Chain Analytics and cooperate closely with other researchers of the Institute. The successful candidate is expected to teach courses in Supply Chain Analytics at the bachelor, master, and PhD level as well as in executive education programs; to play an active role in the management and coordination of the Institute's research projects and to give guidance to less senior researchers at the Institute. Notably, the position will be linked to a second tenure track position “International Business Analytics” and thus serve as a bridging element between the Institute of Transport and Logistics Management and the Institute of International Business in the Department of Global Business and Trade. Activities to bridge both Institutes will include externally funded research projects and co-operation with external partners (practitioners, policymakers).

Your profile:


·         Applicants should have a solid academic qualification (at least a PhD or equivalent) in Supply Chain Management, Operations Research, Computer Science, Information Systems, Statistics, Mathematics, Operations Management, (or related fields).

·         The successful applicant should be on his or her way to establish an international reputation as a researcher in Supply Chain Analytics and be well connected in the international academic community of Supply Chain Analytics experts.

·         He/she should already have a track record of publications in peer reviewed international journals, a proven interest in the areas of Supply Chain Management and International Economics/Business, strong data analytics skills (e.g. data mining, machine learning, data science, predictive analytics) and an interest in applying these skills to real-life problems in supply chain management.

·         A demonstrated commitment to excellence in teaching and teaching experience in English is required.

·         As the candidate is expected to take over teaching responsibilities in WU's master program “Supply Chain Management”, teaching experience at the Master/Executive level is welcome.

·         Experience in the acquisition of third-party funded projects is of advantage.

·         Ability to enlarge and deepen the network of contacts to the international academic community is required.

·         Applicants must either have completed their PhD or doctoral program outside of Austria or must have completed at least one year of documented academic work experience as a post-doctoral researcher outside of Austria.

·         Non-German speaking applicants are expected to acquire knowledge of workable German.
