The Sustainability, Ethics, and Entrepreneurship (SEE) Conference draws on knowledge from diverse disciplines.  These include but are not limited to studies on sustainability, social entrepreneurship, business ethics, firm-community ties, and environmental impacts.  The fact that ethics and sustainability are intertwined with the concept of entrepreneurship is no longer new. Indeed, ethical choices are critical to any business activity and key to the success of startups, small firms, medium enterprises, and large, multinational corporations.  Some even suggest that the focus on sustainability, ethics, and entrepreneurship triangulates every economic opportunity and social value.  The goal of the conference is to lead the advancement and accumulation of knowledge about SEE-related topics.

This sharing of scholarly research is the foundation of the annual SEE Conference, which serves as a platform for advancing cutting-edge research, ideas and theories, while fostering collaborative efforts, and building a worldwide network of scholars who develop the state of knowledge about SEE-related research.  To this end, the 2014 SEE Conference includes two events: a Professional Development Workshop (PDW)-sponsored by the Strategic Entrepreneurship Journal (SEJ)-and an Academic Research Conference (ARC).

1)    Academic Research Conference (ARC) - Call for Abstracts

The ARC begins Thursday, May 22, with a cocktail reception and poster presentations, followed by dinner and a keynote speaker.  Friday, May 23, features the latest scholarly work from around the world delivered by contributors in presentation sessions and keynote addresses.

Contributors are invited to submit abstracts (2 single-spaced pages not exceeding 1,250 words) that address a broad array of subjects on the topics of sustainability, ethics, and entrepreneurship (SEE). Those selected by a double-blind review process will be asked to present at either paper or poster sessions during the 2014 SEE Conference May 22-23.

Submitting an abstract signifies a commitment that at least one of the authors will participate in the conference. Submitting an abstract also represents a commitment that the featured ideas are original and come from unpublished working papers.  Finally, the ARC is limited to 150 attendees; about 24 manuscripts; and 12 posters.  This low acceptance rate assures a high-quality scholarly event.

The authors of accepted abstracts may be invited to publish their papers in an edited volume by World Scientific Publishing<http://www.worldscientific.com/>(Don Siegel; Editor-In-Chief. Gideon Markman; Volume Editor).

We invite submission of empirical and conceptual Abstracts.  We are particularly interested in radical, controversial, and "edgy" projects; novel, useful, and non-obvious research that challenges dogmas and is highly revelatory, even if not fully grounded in well-studied or well-validated theory.

Potential topics include, but are not limited to, the following areas:

*         How does strategy differ when firms are not constituted as vehicles of private wealth

accumulation but are owned by communities of members or government?

*         In a capitalist system, wealth and value are measured in monetary units: what is social value, how is social value measured, and how do social value and economic value interact and shape each other?

Free markets and competition have brought many benefits (e.g., the average individual material well-being has improved markedly, even if the variance is distressing). How does this increasing but uneven material prosperity relate to human wellbeing, sustainability and entrepreneurship?

*         How does market competition affect the fabric of trust and social value within and between different organizational forms?

*         How does one gain better understanding of sustainable and ethical entrepreneurship?

What are most useful conceptual models and empirical analysis of the antecedents, consequences, and contingencies associated with the processes of sustainable and ehical entrepreneurship?

*        What is the role of ethical behavior in the growth, survival, and sustainability of new ventures?

*         What are the roles of economic and institutional systems in motivating ethical and sustainable behaviors?

The conference reviewers are members of the SEE Conference's Advisory Board<http://seeconf.org/about/Pages/Advisory-Board.aspx>.  Every abstract is evaluated by 2-4 reviewers. While each reviewer makes independent judgments, there are some common threads that distinguish accepted from rejected abstracts:

*         Abstracts that open up new research frontiers or offer new insights or perspectives that enrich discussion and discourse.

*         Abstracts that address unimpeachably important, timely, and relevant topics.

*         Abstracts where SEE-related research has clear conceptual and/or practical implications.

*         Stating the current stage of data collection and anticipated completion of data collection and analysis is helpful.  The reviewers consider the potential for completion of the work described in the abstract.

*         Reviewers assume that authors of accepted abstracts entered with good faith and expect that the research will be competently completed before the conference.

Do not include references, tables, and the like in the abstract.  Also your name or contact information should NOT appear anywhere in the document



2)    Strategic Entrepreneurship Journal (SEJ) is holding a Professional Development Workshop (PDW).  Here is the Call for Applicants:

The SEE Conference and the Strategic Entrepreneurship Journal (SEJ) are holding a PDW, which is designed to meet the needs of later stage doctoral students and those recently graduated beginning their careers as assistant professors. The PDW will feature roundtable workshops, interactions with SEJ's editorial team members, keynote addresses from senior scholars, and paper development sessions to assist young scholars in transforming their technically competent research into highly impactful manuscripts.



Attendance is limited to 30 participants, and PDW participants are also encouraged to attend the ARC.  All individuals interested in attending should send the following information to Tom Dean, Professor at Colorado State University (Tom.Dean at business.colostate.edu<mailto:Tom.Dean at business.colostate.edu>):

1.  A short (one page or less) biographical sketch, which can be distributed to all participants.

2. A brief statement (one page or less) of your research and teaching interests.

3. A working paper.

4. A current curriculum vitae.

Due to the generosity of the Kauffman Foundation and other sponsors, there is no registration fee for the PDW, and there is only a $100 registration fee for the ARC.  Meals, beverages, and shuttle service from the conference hotel to the University of Denver or a parking pass, will be provided for attendees of the PDW and ARC.

The SEE Conference also offers grants of up to $500 for selected Ph.D. students and early-stage assistant professors. Details on how to apply for grants will be sent with acceptance notifications.
