Call for Abstracts for Presentations and Papers
Second International Symposium on Engineering Systems
June 15-17, 2009
MIT
Abstracts are invited on all aspects of engineering systems for
presentation at the second International Symposium on Engineering
Systems. The first two days of the symposium will include keynote
talks by Charles Vest and Norm Augustine, along with plenary sessions
involving senior representatives from academia, government, industry,
and the national academies addressing topics including critical
issues and grand challenges, and global university initiatives. The
last of these sessions will introduce some key research methods and
issues, with invited talks on topics such as system architecture,
enterprise perspectives, network analysis, computational social
science, engineering systems design, sustainability, and critical
infrastructure.
Abstracts are sought via this call for presentations to be held
during concurrent sessions on the third day. Emphasis will be on
both engineering systems approaches/methodologies (e.g. complexity,
flexibility, uncertainty, emergence, system safety, security,
sustainability, social/political/economic analysis, etc.), and on
applications/domains (e.g. transportation, energy, communications,
aerospace, health care, manufacturing systems, etc.).
Presenters will be chosen based on extended abstracts of up to 750
words. The deadline for abstract submission is January 15, 2009.
Please send these to esdsymposium-abstract at mit.edu, with your last
name included in the file name. Responses regarding acceptance of
the abstracts for presentation should be available by Feb. 15, 2009.
In addition to presenting at the conference, successful abstract
submitters will have the option of supplementing their presentation
with a paper for inclusion in conference proceedings. Accepted
papers will be posted on the ESD website. (Papers from the 2004
symposium can be viewed at:
http://esd.mit.edu/symposium/agenda_day3.htm.) Final review papers
will be due on May 15th, 2009. The recommended length is 8-10 pages
excluding references.
