NEXT DASER: 17 OCTOBER
Join us for the next D.C. Art Science Rendezvous (DASER) on Thursday, 17 October from 7–9 p.m. in Room 100 of the Keck Center, 500 Fifth St., N.W. This month’s DASER, organized in collaboration with the Koshland Science Museum and Issues in Science and Technology, will explore the topic of science fiction. Speakers will include Catherine Asaro, author of Saga of the Skolian Empire; Joel Garreau, Future Tense Fellow and Lincoln Professor of Law, Culture and Values at the Sandra Day O’Connor College of Law, Arizona State University; Lee Konstantinou, author of Pop Apocalypse and co-editor of The Legacy of David Foster Wallace; and Celia Peters, filmmaker and visual artist. Kevin Finneran, Director of the Committee on Science, Engineering and Public Policy and Editor-in-Chief of Issues in Science and Technology will be the guest facilitator. NEXT NYC LASER: 17 OCTOBER
Join us for the next NYC LASER event on 17 October, 6:30 p.m. at LevyArts in New York City. The evening’s program includes presentations by Meredith Tromble, past Leonardo Board member, on the collaborative work she is doing with a geobiologist at the KeckCAVES visualization facility at UC Davis, and Jill Scott, of the Institute for Cultural Studies in the Arts at ZHdK (Zurich, Switzerland) and Co-Director of the Artists-in-Labs Program. Scott will describe AURALROOTS, her current neuroscience residency with SymbioticA in Perth in the Audiology Lab at the University of Western Australia. BOOK SIGNING: WALKING AND MAPPING: ARTISTS AS CARTOGRAPHERS
On Thursday, 17 October, Leonardo/Olats and Jeu de Paume bookstore will host a book signing for Karen O'Rouke’s new book Walking and Mapping: Artists as Cartographers, published by the MIT Press as part of the Leonardo Book Series. The book signing will take place 7–9 p.m. at the Librairie du Jeu de Paume, 1 Place de la Concorde, Paris, France. Artists Esther Polak and Ivar van Bekkum will also be present at the event. CALL FOR PAPERS: LMJ 24: < 40—EMERGING VOICES
It’s time to stand on our tiptoes and peer over the horizon. For Volume 24 of Leonardo Music Journal, forthcoming in 2014, we solicit articles (papers of up to 3,000 words) and shorter statements (750 to 1000 words) from artists born after 1975, addressing the impact of emerging technological resources on new aesthetic movements. We are particularly interested in contributions from artists from underrepresented communities. Proposal deadline: 1 November 2013. Address short proposals (1 or 2 paragraphs) to Nicolas Collins, Editor-in-Chief, at: ncollins at saic.edu. Full manuscript is due 2 January 2014 (if proposal is accepted). CALL FOR PARTICIPATION: HYPOTHESIS: AN ART/SCIENCE FAIR
Hypothesis: An Art/Science Fair examines the intersection of art and science by showcasing the ways in which both artists and scientists ask questions, experiment with processes and arrive at outcomes. The Lab invites artists, makers, performers, scientists, writers and any other interested parties to participate. The event will take place on the evening of Friday, 1 November at The Lab in San Francisco. Participants will be asked to represent their practice (artistic, scientific or any combination thereof) in relation to the scientific method and present it in the form of a traditional science fair display board. The collected displays will be exhibited in a traditional science fair format; viewers will be able to interact with the presenters as well as see and explore the questions, research and results of the participants' work. CALL FOR APPLICANTS: BEAM TIME ARTIST’S RESEARCH RESIDENCY
The Arts Catalyst and Artquest have announced a new artist research residency at the Central Laser Facility in Oxfordshire, U.K. The residency aims to give the resident artist the opportunity to develop their practice (and potentially a new body of work) through a period of research and engagement with science specialists. The Beam Time residency offers a unique opportunity for an artist to engage with scientists using state-of-the-art lasers. The artist will present his or her work and research in a public event in May 2014. Deadline to submit: 25 November 2013. Find out more

PANEL SERIES: PERFORMING CHANGE
A panel series entitled Performing Change will be held on Saturday, 19 October 2013, 4–8 p.m. at EYEBEAM, Chelsea, New York City, NY. Performing Change, curated and organized by Paolo Cirio, will feature five lectures and discussions: Ontologies of Media Art Interventions, Tactical Fiction for Alternative Realities, The Art of Performing Political Innovation and Performing Alternative Art Economies. The panels are intended to inspire alternative aesthetics, interventionist tactics and economic models for critical art practices. Speakers will include Vito Acconci, Wafaa Bilal, Stephen Duncombe, Peter Macapia, Carne Ross, George E. Sánchez, Denisse A. Arévalo, Mark Amerika, Marisa Jahn, Lina Srivastava, Laurel Ptak, Carlo Zanni and Jose Serrano-McClain. Find out more

CALL FOR ARTISTS: INTERNATIONAL SPACE SOLAR POWER SYMPOSIUM
The International Astronautical Federation (IAF) Power Committee, the National Space Society (NSS), SPACE Canada and the International Academy of Astronautics (IAA), in cooperation with Kobe University, have begun organizing the next International Space Solar Power Symposium, SPS 2014. Organizers are issuing a call for artists to take part in an exhibition at the symposium featuring artists who have done work on space-based solar power. CALL FOR PROPOSALS: WATERWHEEL WORLD WATER DAY SYMPOSIUM 2014
The third online edition of the Waterwheel World Water Day Symposium (3WDS14) will begin on 17 March 2014 and conclude on World Water Day, 22 March. Scientists, academics, artists, architects, urbanists, engineers, practitioners, activists, inventors and water drinkers are invited to submit projects and papers, performances, panels and workshops adhering to the theme “Water Views: Caring and Daring.” 3WDS14 will take place online and in “nodes” located all over the world.
