NEWS

LABS 2013
As we near the end of the academic year we encourage students who will be getting an M.A., M.F.A. or Ph.D. on a subject related to the intersection of art, science and technology to submit an abstract of their thesis to LABS (Leonardo Abstract Services). This peer-reviewed database has been in existence for over 10 years and functions as a way for international artists and scholars to learn about the work of the next generation. The top-ranking authors each year are invited to publish their work in Leonardo journal and LEA. The LABS peer reviewers for this year are: Yiannis Colakides, David Familian, Tom Leeser, Emmanuel Mahe, Andrea Polli, Lea Rekow, Edward Shanken and Charissa N. Terranova. The database can be viewed at http://leonardolabs.pomona.edu. Inquiries: Sheila Pinkel: spinkel at earthlink.net. Find out more

PUBLICATIONS

FORTHCOMING LEONARDO BOOK SERIES RELEASE: WALKING AND MAPPING: ARTISTS AS CARTOGRAPHERS BY KAREN O'ROURKE
Mapping is a way for us to locate ourselves in the world physically, culturally, or psychologically: Contemporary artists beginning with Guy Debord and Richard Long have returned again and again to the walking motif. Author Karen O’Rourke offers close readings of these works—many of which she was able to experience firsthand—and situates them in relation to landmark works from the past half-century. She shows that the infinitesimal details of each of these projects take on more significance in conjunction with others. Together, they form a new entity, a dynamic whole greater than the sum of its parts. O’Rourke is a multimedia and communications artist whose work has been exhibited in Europe, the United States, and South America. Find out more
