Join Leonardo at the 2012 SIGGRAPH Conference in Los Angeles, 5-9 August 2012. Leonardo events include a reception for the SIGGRAPH Gallery: In Search of the Miraculous and the associated Leonardo special issue (7 August, 2-3:30PM) and the Leonardo Birds of a Feather meeting (8 August, 1-2:30PM) featuring presentations by Leonardo Affiliate representatives Sheila Pinkel (Pomona College, Los Angeles), Eleonora Bilotta (University of Calabria, Italy), Roger Malina (ATEC at University of Texas, Dallas; Leonardo) and Heather Lineberry (Chief Curator, Arizona State University Art Museum). LEONARDO EDUCATION AND ART FORUM WELCOMES DAVID FAMILIAN AS NEW CHAIR-ELECT
David Familian is the Artistic Director of the Beall Center for Art and Technology at University of California-Irvine. He started working at the Beall in 2005 and has curated one-person exhibitions of Shih Chieh Huang, Golan Levin, Rafael Lozano-Hemmer, Chico MacMurtrie, Jennifer and Kevin McCoy, Nam June Paik, and Victoria Vesna. He is currently working on DataVIz: Information a show of artists and designers who use data visualization. He also recently initiated Black Box Projects, collaborations/exhibitions of artists working with scientists in areas such as cognitive robotics, computational genetics and information science. David joins Patricia Olynyk (Chair) and Adrienne Klein (Co-Chair) in the administration of the Leonardo Education and Art Forum. Find out more

LEA CALL: LIVE VISUALS FOR PERFORMANCE, GAMING, INSTALLATION, AND ELECTRONIC ENVIRONMENTS
The proposed LEA special issue Live Visuals for Performance, Gaming, Installation, and Electronic Environments seeks to explore the future of the moving image, simultaneously acknowledging and extending on recent artistic trends and technological developments. Leonardo Electronic Almanac (LEA) is inviting proposals from computer scientists, artists, designers, live visualists and critical theorists interested in real-time visuals for an issue co-edited by Lanfranco Aceti (LEA Editor in Chief), Steve Gibson, (Reader in Interactive Media Design at Northumbria University, Newcastle) and Stefan Müller Arisonav (principal investigator at ETH Zurich‘s Future Cities Laboratory, Singapore). Leonardo welcomes The Institute of Creative Technologies at De Montfort University as a new affiliate member. The IOCT is a university-wide research institute that concerns itself with the practice, theory and history of creative technologies. All its projects are either interdisciplinary (applying the methods from one discipline to another), multidisciplinary (teams from various disciplines combining to investigate a research question) or transdisciplinary (across and beyond all disciplines). IOCT research focuses upon three areas: Creative Computing, Interactive Arts and Media and Networks and Collaboration. Find out more

SYMPOSIUM ON SCIENTIFIC VISUALIZATION, COPENHAGEN
The Symposium on Scientific Visualization (25-26 September 2012) at the Royal Danish Academy of Sciences and Letters, Copenhagen will explore how connections between art, design and science inspire and advance research, innovation and working processes in scientific data visualization. Speakers will share ideas for and processes of their work in visualization across disciplines. Talks and discussions will address how visual ideas and intentions are transformed by the use of different tools and technologies, how to meet the challenges of cross-discipline collaborations, how to gain and apply inspiration through multidisciplinary processes, and how these processes can enrich both the practice of science and art.
