June YASMIN Discussion—
Art and Atoms: Fission and Fusion
During the month of June 2009 YASMIN participants will discuss the
ways in which the arts and humanities are engaging with nuclear
energy, and the cultural context of nuclear fusion and fission. This
includes both peaceful and military uses of nuclear energy, as well
as the use of radio-isotopes in medicine and natural radioactivity.
Discussions will include both historical examples from the 1950s and
'60s as well as the engagement of artists, science historians and
other researchers today. FIND OUT MORE

Inside Leonardo 42:3: Midas at the molecular scale: At the nano
level, when we touch gold we become part of it and it part of us.
Paul Thomas digs beneath our myths about reality with atomic force
microscopes and silicon nitride cantilevers. Getting back in touch:
Thecla Shiphorst sees that, as mobile, wearable technology starts to
vanish into our clothes, our motions and senses come under the
spotlight. She and her colleagues watch the busy intersection of
body, mind and technology. Making ourselves into makers: More and
more creators today mash the play and invention of art and design up
with the tools and precision of engineering and science. Mark Gross
and Ellen Yi-Luen trace the revival of a "maker culture." The
Leonardos of posthumanist perspective: Cami Nelson compares Leonardo
da Vinci's skeptical approach to the Renaissance theory of painting
with recent artists' revisions to virtual reality. FIND OUT MORE

Banff New Media Institute Joins Leonardo Affiliate Membership
The Banff New Media Institute (BNMI) is an internationally respected
arts production and research institute. Programs are designed to
support creative pluralism, different modes of inquiry, the
production of new work, and the engagement of artists, producers,
technologists, and researchers with the aesthetics and culture of new
media. BNMI offers thematic and self-directed artist residencies,
partners on research initiatives, provides training, and offers
professional development and production support in a multi-
disciplinary development environment. Practitioners are able to
access a range of expertise, peers, facilities, and environments--all
in the Centre's inspiring mountain campus. BNMI draws on more than 15
years of new media experience at The Banff Centre. Working with key
partners, BNMI leverages local knowledge, international networks, and
a commitment to providing a rich context for experimentation, risk
taking, and the development of new knowledge. Fundamental to BNMI is
the belief that the creative sector flourishes through collaboration
and that the links and tensions across art, technology, science, and
research have a critical role to play in describing new ways to see
the world, participating in contemporary cultures, and shaping the
future. BNMI features a cross-disciplinary and cross-cultural
environment where practices and people converge. Leonardo/ISAST
