About Dr. Jennifer Selby:
Dr. Jennifer Selby is currently a Fulbright postdoctoral fellow with the 
Islam in the West program at the Center for Middle Eastern Studies at 
Harvard University. She completed her PhD in 2007 (Religious Studies,
McMaster University, Canada) undertaking an ethnography of a Parisian 
suburb and examining secularism and gender politics in France.

About the Talk:
Muslim women in France are at the centre of contemporary debates about 
religion in the public sphere, gender politics and immigration. The 
*hijab*or Islamic headscarf has become emblematic of these issues. Dr. 
Selby's presentation, entitled "Banning Headscarves in France: A History 
of French Secularism, Muslim Women and the *banlieues*" seeks to 
entangle why the French government voted to ban conspicuous religious 
symbols in government  offices and public schools and why the law was 
adopted and enforced with
relatively little national controversy. Based on ethnographic research 
in Petit Nanterre, a suburb 15 kilometres northwest of Paris, she 
examines how North African Muslim women interpreted the law and how 
Muslims in this *banlieue* living in housing projects outside of Paris 
have responded to the fetishization of the headscarf and the 
politicization of Islam in France.

Dr. Jennifer Selby poursuit actuellement son post-doctorat au sein du 
programme "Islam in the West" au Center for Middle Eastern Studies à 
l'Université de Harvard. Elle effectue ses recherches à Harvard grâce à 
une prestigieuse bourse Fullbright. Dr. Selby a obtenu son PhD en 2007 
(Religious Studies, McMaster University, Canada) en faisant une étude 
ethnographique d'une banlieue parisienne, examinant la laïcité et la
politique des sexes en France.

A propos de la conférence:
Les femmes musulmanes en France se retrouvent au centre de débats 
contemporains au sujet de la religion dans la sphere publique, de la 
politique des sexes et de l'immigration. Le hijab, ou le voile est devenu
emblématique de ces débats. La conférence de Dr. Selby, intitulée 
"Banning Headscarves in France: A History of French Secularism, Muslim 
Women and the banlieues" cherche à expliquer pourquoi le  gouvernement 
français a voté pour l'interdiction du port de signes religieux au sein 
de l'administration publique et dans les écoles publiques, et pourquoi 
la loi a été adoptée et mise en vigueur sans trop de contreverse. En se 
basant sur une recherche ethnographique à Petit Nanterre, une banlieue à 
15 kilomètres de Paris, Dr. Selby examine comment les femmes 
Nord-Africaines ont interprété la loi et comment les musulmans de cette 
banlieue ont répondu à la fétichisation du voile et à la politisation de 
l'Islam en France.
