I am tempted to bump our soname version from 7 to 8 as an immediate fix.
I don't know whether it's important to stick to numbers or not.

If we do have to stick to numbers, I suppose we could have a gentleman's
agreement using even/odd numbers or something.

(I'd also like to understand better why Debian needs to have both sets
of libraries installed, but I have more pressing matters to investigate
at this moment.)
