I believe but am not completely sure that we've already changed that
interface for 1.4.

Yeah, making that interface public is likely to be a bit of a problem.

I'd recommend sending the diffs to Ken Raeburn <raeburn at mit.edu> or
better yet filing them in our bug tracking system.
