The removal of the gethostbyaddr call was part of the changes to
support IPv6.  I did that a while back, but I don't think the change
in behavior was intentional.  (I vaguely recall discussing the fact
that we had four translations back and forth between names and
addresses, but don't remember the details of the discussion.)  On the
other hand, since this makes telnet and ftp consistent (I think?) in a
situation we don't really support at the moment, and *not* doing this
back-and-forth translation is the direction we want to be going, long
term, maybe it was.  Hm.

I'm getting ready to head to the IETF conference next week, and I'm
taking a few days of vacation after that, so I'm not sure how much
time I'll have for looking at this in the very short term.
