Regarding the published code of Kerberos V5

Hi,

I am a research student in India and working on a
filesystems project where we are planning to provide
authentication using Kerberos V5. Can we use the
published code directly by customizing it according to
our requirements and still maintaining the standard ?

If not what options I have ? Do I have to take
permission from somebody to use the code in my project
? 

Please help me clearing this so that we can decide the
things and proceed. It will be a great help.
