troubleshooting tip and minor bug report

I had a problem the other day, solved now. The symptoms were that putty
would exit with a unspecified network error, and the network identity
manager kept asking for a password (no error message).

our setup:
mit kdc on debian,
kfw on winxp,
putty compilled against mit gssapi.

the cause:
our primary kdc went down: hard drive failed.
not all clients had been configured for both kdcs.
end of line characters got garbled when updating krb5.ini

the complaint: no diagnostic message!
