I don't know what your problem is.  Too many groups is one factor but
its not the cause of your problem.
You haven't provided enough details.  However, I'm going to guess that
your non-AD realm that you are attempting to obtain service tickets from
doesn't support TCP/IP Kerberos connections and therefore the ticket
request is failing.
