Short name referrals

I have a trust between an AD Forest and a MIT K5 realm setup.  I am
running krb5-1.3.4 with the UMICH patch.  Referrals are working for SPN
with long names.  I see in the code it wants to try to refer anything else
to a default referral realm.  How do I set this default referral realm?
Will this refer the short names as well?
