Kerberos password changing grief - no such principal

More on the password changing front - in my current setup, with
both an MIT krb5kdc, kadmind, and krb524d running, if I try to
change a password from a KerberosIV client, I get an error like:

kpasswd: Kerberos error: Principal unknown (kerberos)

A similiar error happens from an old Mac Kerberos V client and a Windows
Kerberos IV client. But none of these clients have any problem getting
tickets or logging in, and a recent (i.e. Kerberos V) MIT kpasswd is
also able to change passwords without problems.

The docs I've found on the net suggest that this error is usually
due to client setup problems, where you're trying the wrong Kerberos
server. I don't think that's the problem here, since I see log
messages on the correct server when the password changes are attempted.

Does anyone have suggestions on how to troubleshoot this further?
