From punya at MIT.EDU Fri Jan 26 11:30:54 2007 From: punya at MIT.EDU (Punyashloka Biswal) Date: Fri, 26 Jan 2007 11:30:54 -0500 Subject: [Kavita] Reminder: Poetry in South Asian Languages -- Jan 29 5:00--6:30, Rm 66-148 Message-ID: <51a999440701260830v7718cd43i45fe9b0a742ba229@mail.gmail.com> [Some of you may have received a copy of this via Junta already. Sorry for the duplicate email! --Punya] Friends, I'd like to invite all of you to participate in a poetry reading event at MIT on January 29. Poems can be in any south Asian language, and you don't have to be the author of a poem to read it! If you are interested in attending and reading a poem, or simply listening to others recite poetry, please write to me and let me know. SPEAKERS: If you are planning to recite poetry at the event, I would appreciate if you could send me a copy of the poem, preferably with an English translation, so that I can include it in a booklet to be handed out to attendees. If this is inconvenient for you, you can also bring your own copies (at least 15); if none of these works for you, that's fine too. Just email me the title of the poem and a rough estimate of how long you'll recite it/talk about it. LISTENERS: Many of us last took a Hindi (or other Indian language) class over a decade ago, and before long we'll have trouble differentiating black letters from buffaloes (hopefully, that reference made sense). Please join me in celebrating our glorious and varied literary tradition. Oh, and also in drinking chai and eating samosas. EVENT DETAILS: Date: January 29, 2006 Time: 5:00pm -- 6:30pm Place: MIT Room 66-148 (http://whereis.mit.edu/map-jpg?mapterms=66-148) This event is sponsored by the MIT Indian Students Association, Sangam. Visit http://web.mit.edu/sangam for information about Sangam and more events. I look forward to hearing from you! I accepted the invitation to be a TA mentor at the IAP EECS Annual TA workshop (http://student.mit.edu/searchiap/iap-7807.html) and dinner, which is scheduled for 5:30 - 7:30 tonight. I am really sorry but I don't think I'll be able to make it to the poetry event tonight. Wish you guys have a great event!
