FYI for all of you who found Castells' work interesting -- he'll be
here during IAP (also known as January at MIT).
>>>The Department of Urban Studies and Planning, Media Arts and
>>>Sciences, and the Program in Science, Technology and Society are
>>>collaborating to bring the eminent sociologist Manuel Castells to
>>>the MIT campus to teach a (non-credit-bearing) graduate seminar on
>>>"Information Technology and Society" during the Independent
>>>Activities Period of 2004. DUSP, MAS, and STS expect that
>>>Professor Castells will continue to make annual visits to MIT to
>>>conduct seminars for graduate students and faculty.
>>>
>>>The 2004 graduate seminar will meet in the Stella Room [Room
>>>7-338] for five sessions, each one starting 10:30 AM and ending at
>>>12:30 PM, from Monday to Friday, January 12-16. A syllabus and
>>>reading list will be available by the end of the fall term.
>>>
>>>Enrollment is limited to 25 graduate students. Since we anticipate
>>>that we may have to limit enrollment, we are asking you to
>>>indicate your interest in participating in this seminar by
>>>November 14, 2003. To do this, please send a brief CV and a page
>>>(ca. 250 words) explaining the reasons for your interest in the
>>>Castells seminar to Kris Kipp at: kipp at mit.edu. These applications
>>>will be reviewed by Larry Vale, Bill Mitchell, and Rosalind
>>>Williams (heads of DUSP, MAS, and STS respectively). You will be
>>>notified by December 7 if your application has been accepted.
>>>
>>>Also, please let Kris Kipp know if you are interested in serving
>>>as Professor Castells's assistant during the week of January
>>>11-18. This would be a paid half-time job that would appeal to
>>>students who can keep a flexible schedule and who want to spending
>>>informal time with Professor Castells. If you are interested in
>>>this job, we will send you a more detailed job description and
>>>other information about the selection process.
